Employment Training and Academic Award Scheme

Guidelines

Introduction

There are two aspects to this program. The Employment Training Assistance is particularly designed to encourage Thalassaemia patients, particularly those in need of financial assistance, and to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to secure their present job or to prepare them for a better career in the future. A special committee appointed by the Foundation would assess the applications twice a year in the spring and in the fall.

The Achievement Awards serve as an encouragement to Thalassaemia patients who have obtained outstanding results in the HKCEE and HKALE; no financial assessment will be required.

Employment Training Assistance Program

Who Can Apply

All patients with Thalassaemia Major who are permanent residents of Hong Kong, aged 16 or above and not full-time secondary school student, is eligible to apply. Special cases, such as Thalassaemia Intermediate or previous Thalassaemia Major patients who have recovered after Bone Marrow or Cord Blood Transplant within 5 years, may also apply.

Criteria of Training

The selected training program must either be related to the applicant's present job or be considered to help the applicant's future career development. Applicants are required to give a clear description of their career goals and how the training program would serve to achieve such goals.

Requirements of Applicants

Applications should be submitted before any payment is made for the selected training course. For those who have already paid from their own resources for such courses, their applications might not be considered. Upon granting of the funds from the Foundation, all applicants are obliged to demonstrate their best efforts to attend and complete the course. Attendance rate must not be lower than 80%. Proof of attendance and examination results (or course report) must be submitted to the Foundation within a month at the completion of the course. Should any applicants fail to do so, no future request would be considered by the Foundation.

Academic Achievement Award

Introduction

The Award is as an encouragement to Thalassaemia patients who have obtained outstanding results in the HKDSE, and no financial assessment will be required.

All patients with Thalassaemia Major who are permanent residents of Hong Kong are eligible to apply. Special cases, such as Thalassaemia Intermediate or previous Thalassaemia Major patients who have recovered after Bone Marrow or Cord Blood Transplant within 5 years, may also apply.

HKDSE

The scholarship is awarded to candidates of Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) who have met the requirements as follow:

HK$5,000 Scholarship - Candidates who have successfully enrolled in a Hong Kong Government recognized university* for a full time degree course using the results of HKDSE of the current year.

* The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, Lingnan University

Continuing Education Program

Who Can Apply

All patients with Thalassaemia Major who are permanent residents of Hong Kong are eligible to apply. Special cases, such as Thalassaemia Intermediate or previous Thalassaemia Major patients who have recovered after Bone Marrow or Cord Blood Transplant within 5 years, may also apply.

The Program

The Continuing Education Program aims to help financing thalassaemia major patients with learning aspirations to pursue continuing education and training courses. Applicants may obtain approval of HK$8,000 subsides for selected training courses within 5 years from the date of first application. More than one reimbursable course may be subsidized, subject to a maximum ceiling of HK$8,000 per applicant. Applicants are requested to submit valid official receipts and certificates of applied courses for approval.

Reimbursement courses

All full time or part-time continuing education courses organized by tertiary institutions, interest courses, and languages courses are eligible to apply, subject to the discretion of the Employment Training Committee.

Other conditions

Upon seeking reimbursement of the fees, the applicant must not have obtained any other publicly-funded financial assistance for the same course such as -

Completed application forms should be returned with the examination results to the Children's Thalassaemia Foundation by mail or fax at the above address, within 3 months after announcement of the examination results of the current year.
